 Romeo and Juliet, The Balcony Scene, oil by Hans Makart, Austrian, 1840-1884.
 Makart was an academic history painter, designer and decorator. He became a celebrity figure in Vienna and was invited there by the Austrian aristocracy. He was called “the magician of colors.”
 This illustration from Act II, Scene 2 of William Shakespeare’s play was purchased by the Austrian emperor for the Vienna Museum in Vienna, Austria.
